Affordable sport
Explore free and subsidised introductory golf and multi-sport activities, helping children and families try sports they might otherwise miss out on.
We’re building a community project to help more children, young people and families experience sport. Starting with a simple ambition: make it easier and more affordable to take part.
Shankz CIC is a not-for-profit community organisation based in Plymouth. Our aim is to make sport more affordable, accessible and inclusive, particularly for children and families who have fewer opportunities to take part.
We’re at the very beginning. We haven’t secured funding yet and aren’t currently running or taking bookings for programmes. Right now, we’re developing the idea, listening to local interest and looking for the right people and organisations to help us get started.
Golf is central to the idea, alongside football and other sports. We want to create welcoming opportunities for people to try something new, build confidence and enjoy being active together.
In golf, a shank is one of the worst shots you can hit. But a round isn’t defined by one bad shot. It’s about how you recover.
That’s the thinking behind Shankz. With encouragement and the right opportunities, everyone deserves the chance to develop and move forward. We want the project to feel approachable and relevant to young people.
These are our initial ambitions, subject to funding and partnerships.

Build relationships with clubs, coaches, facilities, schools and community groups in Plymouth and the surrounding areas.
Work towards friendly introductory events that bring families together through sport. Our first activities will depend on the support and resources we can secure.
Shankz was founded by Kieran Hall, drawing on more than 20 years of sports coaching and a career in education, including safeguarding leadership and work with vulnerable young people.
Through GolfHipster, making golf accessible has always been a central aim. After leaving education, Kieran missed the rewarding experience of supporting children and young people directly.
A Get Into Golf event organised with England Golf introduced more than 150 children and families to the sport. It reinforced his belief in what accessible community sport could offer.
Shankz brings those experiences together as a new, independent organisation. It is separate from GolfHipster and Vintage Chubbs, with Kieran’s network helping to open conversations and build support.
Our founding team brings together qualified PE teaching, leadership in pupil referral units and alternative education, designated safeguarding leadership, youth work and mentoring.
That background includes trauma-informed education and behaviour support, alongside Mental Health First Aid and STORM training. It shapes how we think about inclusion, wellbeing and building trusted relationships with young people.
Across the team, coaching experience spans golf, football, rugby, rowing and multi-sport, with a shared understanding of community engagement and sports development.
Founding Director Kieran Hall brings more than 20 years of coaching experience, a career in education and safeguarding, and connections across the golf industry through GolfHipster.
This is the experience we bring to developing Shankz. Our immediate focus is securing funding and local partners for accessible community sport.
We’re seeking our first funding and local partnerships. If you’re a business, potential funder, club, coach, school or community organisation interested in the idea, we’d love to hear from you.
Support could help us take practical first steps with equipment, facility access, coaching and introductory community activities.
Shankz is a Community Interest Company limited by guarantee. Any surplus will be reinvested in its community purpose.
